About the Item

A rare and impressive George III silver stirrup cup, masterfully crafted in the form of a snarling fox’s head. Made in Sheffield in 1807 by Henry Tudor and Thomas Leader, this sculptural drinking vessel captures the spirit of the hunt with striking naturalism. The fox’s sharp eyes, alert ears, textured fur, and bared teeth are finely chased and cast in high relief, demonstrating the exceptional artistry of early 19th-century silversmithing. The interior is richly parcel-gilt, both protecting the silver and adding a touch of opulence when in use. These ceremonial cups were traditionally presented to riders on horseback before the hunt, and examples of this quality and condition are scarce. This piece represents not only a functional drinking vessel but also an evocative symbol of Georgian society and craftsmanship. Specifications: Date: 1807 Period: George III Maker: Henry Tudor Thomas Leader Assay Office: Sheffield Material: Sterling silver Interior: Parcel gilt Form: Stirrup cup, fox head Weight: 162 grams Dimensions: Height: 13.5 cm Width: 12 cm Depth: 7.3 cm Condition Report: Excellent condition for age.
