About the Item

George Reid Sterling Silver Bread Basket Here we have a wonderful Early Victorian Sterling Silver Mounted Cut Glass Travelling Inkwell. The inkwell is oblong with a hobnail cut body. The silver top rim and hinged lid are engine turned around a blank circular cartouche. There is a small piece of leather set into the lid to form a seal and the lid is secured by a screw with a folding turner. The Bread Basket was made in London by silversmith George Reid and dates to 1820. George Reid registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in London in 1811. He was active up until his death in 1843 producing small pieces of high quality silverware. The firm was taken over by Ann Reid, probably his widow, who carried on in business until the late 1840s. Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and no chips or cracks , just the overall superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
