About the Item
An Iraqi silver Shabbat candlestick holder from around 1920 is a remarkable piece of Judaica, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the Iraqi Jewish community.
The Jewish community in Iraq has ancient roots, dating back to the Babylonian exile. By the early 20th century, they were a vibrant and integral part of Iraqi society. Jewish artisans in Iraq were known for their skills in metalwork, particularly in silver.
The craftsmanship of this piece reflects the traditional Iraqi design elements featured on the center stem and on the broad domed base that has an engraved Star of David motif. In each corner of the star is one Hebrew letter that when combined forms the words " Neirot Shabbat" which means Shabbat candles. This holder can be used to hold candles as evidenced by the removable candle holders within. They can also be used to contain oil in the two beaker-shaped cups that are pierced with a small hole at the top of the detachable covers, for the protruding wicks. A pierced star of David is affixed to the top of the center baluster-formed stem.
This Iraqi silver Shabbat candlestick holder represents the artistic heritage and cultural identity of the Iraqi Jewish community in the early 20th century. It serves as a historical artifact, illustrating the lifestyle and religious practices of Iraqi Jews during that period and the rich traditions and skilled craftsmanship of the Iraqi Jewish community.

View AllA Silver Shabbat Candelabra, Austria Circa 1925
Located in New York, NY
An elegant silver Shabbat candelabra from Austria circa 1925 is an impressive piece of Judaica, blending the cultural and artistic heritage of Jewish traditions with the craftsmanship of early 20th-century Austrian silversmiths.
The early 20th century in Austria was a period of artistic innovation, with the influence of the Vienna Secession movement, which emphasized modernist design and craftsmanship. Jewish communities in Austria had a rich tradition of creating and using beautifully crafted ritual objects for religious observance.
Candelabra is set on a shaped stepped dome, part-fluted with a cylindrical stem capped by a similar floral-shaped dome. The branches for the candelabra artistically stem from an intertwined center and curve stylishly outward to hold the bobeches for the beaker-shaped cups. A pierced Star of David rests on top of the bell finial applied to the center stem. This design reflects a blend of traditional Jewish themes...
