About the Item

A rare and theatrically conceived Italian bronze and silver oil lamp, crafted in Rome circa 1800, this exceptional piece is far from a typical utilitarian object—it is a sculptural tour de force infused with exoticism, technical ingenuity, and neoclassical drama. The entire composition is centered around a finely sculpted bronze figure, dressed in Egyptian-style garb, complete with a detailed head covering and elegantly draped garments. The figure stands in a poised, upright stance, its anatomy rendered with remarkable realism—from the expressive face and torso to the bare legs and feet, the latter positioned naturally with one foot slightly in front of the other, conveying a sense of gentle movement and balance. The figure supports a shallow tray, upon which rests the silver oil lamp itself—genie-like in form, with three front-facing spouts and a parson-shaped cover. The tray is attached by chains to an urn-shaped vessel mounted atop the figure’s head. This urn features auriform handles on either side, adding to its elegance and echoing classical design motifs. A particularly inventive detail is the long curved armature rising from the top of the urn, which suspends a sharply contoured, shield-shaped wind guard. This piece hangs in front of the flame’s path, cleverly designed to protect the flame from gusts of wind, combining form with practical function in a uniquely artistic manner. The entire ensemble stands on a white marble base, which is domed and stepped, further grounding the composition and highlighting the vertical thrust of the figure. The harmonious interplay of silver, bronze, and marble, along with the thoughtful symbolic and functional elements, creates a lamp that is as much a neoclassical statement piece as it is a rare lighting implement. A striking and imaginative object, merging classical form with Eastern exoticism, and standing as a testament to the artistic innovation and sculptural elegance of early 19th-century Italian decorative arts.

19th Century Iraqi Silver Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Handcut strips of silver that have been bent into curvilinear shapes, with semicircle of candle-sockets, complete with drip-pans. A cast-made pair of birds, appearing to be ducks or geese, flank the servant light, while at top as the finial, a large casting of a hen or rooster. While this overall form of lamp is known as hailing from Iraq, we cannot locate any other Iraqi lamps featuring the animals displayed on our example. Birds such as peacocks were widely used in Iraqi and other Middle-Eastern and North African Chanukah lamps, however the usage of the animals featured on our lamp likely have more to do with the surrounding Islamic culture than revealing any meaning in Judaism, which is typical overall for many motifs found on Jewish ritual...
