About the Item
A large and fine Japanese pure silver (99%) "hobnail" tetsubin style teapot, late Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan.
The beautifully executed teapot of kettle form, featuring a stunning and alluring studded hobnail design of graduated repousse "spikes" that have been meticulously hammered out from the interior of the body to form a mesmerizing pattern. The design is often referred to as "hobnail" in English, or "arare" in Japanese, meaning hail.
The lid is heavy and plain. The finial in the shape of an openwork ball formed as two partially closed plum (ume) blossoms. Another fully opened ume blossom below the knob.
The gracious, curved handle of omega shape, and fitted securely into two chime or bell shaped fittings.
A short and elegant spout completes the teapot.
The underside marked "jugin" for fine silver, usually indicating a purity of 99% silver.
