About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver coasters; part of our wine and drinks related silverware collection These exceptional antique George III sterling silver wine bottle coasters have a circular cylindrical form with a rounded base. Each coaster is embellished with impressive shaped pierced bands of simplified bright cut engraved and pin struck leaf ornamentation accented with oval motifs. The decoration to the body of each piece incorporates a vacant oval cartouche. The upper rim of each coaster is ornamented with an applied thread decorated border. These sterling silver coasters have impressive turned mahogany bases and are fitted with the original baize to the underside. Condition These antique sterling silver wine bottle coasters are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The bright cut decoration to each piece is very crisp and the applied thread ornamentation is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the rim of each coaster are very clear; the nature of the coaster dictates the location of the hallmarks to the rim of the base. In many extant coasters, because of this, the hallmarks may become very worn and illegible. In this instance however the hallmarks remain very clear. Dimensions Diameter of rim 12.8cm/5" Height 3.4cm/1.3" Maker: Joseph Scammell Date: 1795 Origin: London, England Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request. Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of these pieces of Georgian silverware.
