About the Item

Fine and original early Georgian silver tankard with the classic stepped base, graduated, domed lid and a simple moulded girdle applied around the body. The hinged silver lid features a cast scroll silver thumbpiece and has the capacity for 1½ pints (900ml) of your favourite beer or ale. A tankard is a lidded drinking vessel. Unlidded drinking vessels with a handle are called mugs. Although it seems strange now to drink out of a lidded vessel, this was the norm until the second half of the 18th century. Perhaps this was because ceilings were not plastered underneath, so without a lid you stood the risk of having dirt, straw and spiders dropping into your ale. Weight: 648g (20.83 ozt.)
