Mechanics Sterling Co. Preserve Spoon in the Eugenie Pattern Late 19th c. Mechanics Sterling Co., a subsidiary of the American company Watson Newell Co. Attleboro, MA. It began in 1896 as the flatware branch of Watson Newell Co. They were makers of sterling flatware and souvenir spoons. A preserve spoon, also known as a jam spoon, is a serving utensil with a long, slender handle and a deep, round, or sometimes notched bowl, designed to reach the bottom of tall jars and easily scoop and spread jams, jellies, and other preserves.
