About the Item
A 20th Century American solid silver novelty cigar compendium. Made in the shape of a horses carriage, this compendium features an area in the saloon to place cigarettes or small cigars. The front and rear has an area for matchsticks. The wheels rotate and pivot, perfect for a conversation piece for an after dinner party smoking session or as a decorative item. Hallmarked "STERLING" (925 standard), Makers mark Gorham. inventory number 41101.
Gorham Silver, founded in 1831 in Providence, Rhode Island, became one of America’s most respected silver manufacturers. Known for its exceptional craftsmanship, Gorham produced a wide range of items, from fine flatware to elaborate trophies. The company also made novelty smoking accessories, including cigarette cases, lighters, and cigar holders, which gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These pieces, often intricately designed, highlighted Gorham's ability to combine functionality with artistry. Over the years, Gorham earned both national and international recognition for its high-quality work.
