About the Item
An incredibly heavy pair of period Art Nouveau Dutch sterling silver sauce boats from a large service by Ph. Saakes of the Hague.
These pieces are likely from a commissioned service. Saakes was a Dutch gold and silversmith in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He often worked for the royalty of Europe. His son, Th. Saakes, eventually took and expaneded the business.
The design of these sauceboats plays on a theme of water. The sides and feet mimic the undulating movement of water, and the reverse and handle are decorated with three dimensional cattails.
The base is marked with a Dutch assay for the Hague, a silver standard of 0.934 or higher, the maker Ph. Saakes, and a date mark of 1911. It also bears the mark for the retailer Th. H. Saakes.
Length: ca. 9 in.
