About the Item
These exceptionally fine George III Chamber Candlesticks were made in London in 1818 by William Burwash. The Chambersticks have circular bases which display a raised border unusually decorated with gadrooning, scrolls, trailing vines and grapes, in addition to raying shells. The baluster shaped stem rises to a capital decorated with lobing and each pull-off nozzle displays a rim decorated with gadrooning, shells and scrolls. The harp shaped handle displays a leaf capped top and the conical shaped extinguisher has a gadrooned rim and terminates in a bud finial. The extinguisher is attached to the handle with a foliate moulding. Both the base of the chamberstick, the nozzle and extinguisher are engraved with a contemporary Crest. The Chambersticks are in excellent condition and each piece is very well marked with a full set of hallmarks. William Burwash was a fine maker, working in the circle of Paul Storr, from workshops at 14, Bartholomew Close, when these pieces were made. The Chambersticks are of a beautiful design which characterises the Regency period.
