About the Item
CHESTER - AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE PAIR OF EARLY GEORGE III DRINKING MUGS MADE IN CHESTER IN 1765 BY RICHARD RICHARDSON II.
The Mugs are modelled in a style which is seldom seen from Chester. Each stands on a spreading moulded foot, decorated with reeding. The main bodies are baluster in design, with a slightly everted rim and both have attractive plain scroll handles, with a plain cap on top. The front is engraved with a contemporary Crest of a stag's head pierced with an arrow. The Mugs are in quite excellent condition, have a very good colour and are clearly marked on the base, with five marks arranged in a circle. These pieces are of a particularly good gauge and weight, considering their size.
This design, and size, of mug is rare to find from Chester, especially a pair. Due to their rarity they are mentioned in "Chester Silver", 1727-1837, by Canon Maurice Ridgeway, Page 162, items 1
