About the Item

Unique Pair of Neoclassical Solid Silver Condiment Urns with Original Spoons. These are heavy cast silver dating from 1781 and created by London Golsmiths John Wakelin William Taylor. They were very important makers in Georgian London in the 1700s and went on to become part of 'Garrard' Royal Silversmiths. There are pieces by Wakelin Taylor in the Royal Collection today, alongside numerous commissions for the British Aristocracy of the 1700s. These particular urns carry the silver crest of an Earl (third in line of importance in the aristocracy, after a Duke and a Marquess). The three elements of each urn (base, cover and spoon) all carry the same crest an Earl's Coronet with Lion below. Currently I am unable to identify with certainty the crest, but it has striking similarities to that of the 'Earl of Bristol'. The Earl of Bristol also established on of the most important collection of silver in Europe. Now looked after by The English National Trust at his former country house 'Ickworth in Suffolk'. The majority of important pieces by these maker's are in important heritage collections. What makes these really rare, is that I have never seen another pair or anything remotely similar. For lovers of the Neoclassical they employ almost every decorative device of the Georgian period, which itself took inspiration from Ancient Greece and Rome. Greek Key, to the base, Rams Heads to the spoon, Anthemion on the shoulder, swags to the main body of the Urn, beautiful ribbing to the bottom half of main body. The Urns and covers are all years matching, the spoons have their hallmarks rubbed, but are totally original and contemporary to the urns, they carry the identical family crest to both spoons. The condition is overall excellent original, with no repairs or replacement. I purchased these privately in Devon, far West of England, from a local country estate. They had been in the same family for many generations. Extremely rare pieces of Georgian Silver, never having been offered before on the open market.
