About the Item
An elegant and richly detailed pair of silver pitchers, crafted in Prague around 1800, exhibiting both technical refinement and a distinct neoclassical aesthetic, emblematic of Central European silverwork at the turn of the 19th century.
Each pitcher is set upon a square base with delicately incised linear borders adorning the four sides, lending structure and balance to the form. Rising from the base, a thick twisted rope-style band encircles the foundation of the domed circular foot, above which the silver curves upward into a flared conical base embellished with stylized impressed motifs, adding texture and volume. This section is bordered once again by a second prominent twisted rope band, which marks the transition to the urn-like body of the vessel.
The main body of the pitcher is shaped with elongated gadroons rising vertically from the base, tapering into a central midsection where twin rope borders frame a beautifully chased foliate band, composed of scrolling branches and leafy tendrils in rhythmic, naturalistic flow. This motif continues the classical vocabulary of the design and creates a richly decorated centerpiece on each vessel.
Above, the upper body echoes the lower with its curved, conical contour and further impressed decorative motifs, culminating in another twisted rope border just beneath the neck. The spout section is graceful and extended, designed for smooth pouring, while the domed lid is finely engraved with cascading myrtle branches, realistically layered as though resting gently upon one another like soft drapery. At the top of each cover sits a finely cast acorn-form finial, an elegant and symbolic finishing touch.
Each pitcher is fitted with a striking auriform handle carved from rich black boxwood, sweeping upward in a graceful arc with delicately carved scrolling details that reflect the refined classicism of the period. The handles are mounted from the midsection to the upper neck, providing both a decorative and functional element. A small lever, affixed behind the cover, allows the lid to be smoothly lifted for filling or pouring.
A superb pair of neoclassical vessels, both sculptural and functional, blending Bohemian craftsmanship with refined ornamentation—worthy of both private and institutional collections.
Hallmarked on the side and on top, next to the handle of each pitcher.
