About the Item

This is a truly unique collection of Norwegian silver from a private estate in Florida. This set includes a large 830 silver centerpiece by Oslo silversmith N. M. Thune and six large silver candlesticks by Trondheim silversmith Henrik Moller. Both Thune and Moller are well known artists in Norway and their works are represented in the permanent collection of Norway’s National Museum. The candlesticks are in the romantic Norwegian style called “dragestil” (dragon style), which became popular in the late 1800s until the early 1900s. The large three-light candelabra have each two panels telling the norsk saga of Sigurd who slew the dragon Fafner, please see the extra images. The first panel shows “Regin Smeder Sverdet” (Regin makes the sword), panel two “Sigurd Klöver Armbolten med Sverdet” (Sigurd cleaves the anvil with the sword), panel 3 “Sigurd Draeber Dragen Fafner” (Sigurd kills the dragon Fafner), panel 4 “Sigurd og Regin stege dragens hjerte” (Sigurd and Regin cook the dragon’s heart). The centerpiece measures 9 3/8? in height, 20 3/4? in length x 13? (24cm, 53cm x 33cm). Hallmark “Thune 830 S”. The pair of three-light candelabra measure 21½” in height and have a span of 15 1/8? (54.5cm, 38cm). Hallmark “H. Moller 925 Trondhjem”. The four candlesticks measure 12 7/8? (32.5cm) in height. Hallmark “H. Moller 830 Trondhjem.” All of the candlesticks are not only engraved with the initials “MCT”, they are also chased into one of the panels on all six, so clearly they were all made for the one client. The large candelabra also have a panel chased with the date 1907. The four candlesticks each have a panel chased with the date 1900.
