Heading : Silver mounted coconut cup
Date : 1770-1800
Period : George III
Origin : Probably Scotland
Decoration : Silver rim and conical silver foot.
Size : 13.4cm height, 9.5cm diameter
Condition : Very good - the felting does not quite cover the foot entirely
Restoration : Has been refelted.
Weight : 313 grams
While this is not hallmarked it does test as silver. This was typical of many provincial silver makers particularly those in remore areas of Scotland. It is also the finest example that we have offered for sale and remains watertight and fully functional
Hanaps, cups with ornateley carved wooden bowls and covers were popular in England in the 15th century. They saw a revival of interest in the late 18th century when it was believed that the nut itself would soak up impurities of indeed poisons in wines. The Bargello Museum in Florence has two early coconut cups made for drinking chocolate.
Our ladies thought this would make an attractive pot-pourri. I would rather see it filled withe spiced rum !
