About the Item

An extremely large and important Antique English hallmarked heavyweight Sterling Silver Round, Footed Salver or Waiter with maker's marks for the famous and highly collected female silversmith, Hester Bateman (London, 1790/91). This wonderful tray was recently de-accessed from the Birmingham (AL) Museum of Art and still retains its museum "label" and note that it had been previously lacquered (and is now showing signs of some minor peeling. This lacquer can be easily removed with lacquer thinner.) The tray has a finely beaded border with a beautifully hand-engraved "winged leopard" central armorial crest. There is beautiful hand chasing and engraving overall (which "may" have been done at a later date). There is what appears to be curious restoration to the border of the tray and is noted and illustrated purely for accuracy. The hallmarks and maker's marks are clearly stamped and illustrated. It weighs a hefty approx. 65.8 troy ounces (nearly six troy pounds of sterling silver). It is otherwise in very good, age-appropriate condition and a wonderful find for collectors of one of Britain's most famous female silversmith, Hester Bateman.

Repaired: It "appears" that there has been some restoration to the rim or border of this tray. It s origins as an original, hallmarked Hester Bateman Sterling Silver tray is unequivocal. The quality, heft and rarity of the tray are unaffected. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. As this was part of a museum, their curator had it lacquered to avoid having to clean it so often and most of the lacquer still remains (but there are some illustrations of this beginning to peel from age - easily remedied with lacquer thinner.).
