About the Item
Set of two S. Kirk
Son, sterling silver sauce boats from the late 19th or early 20th century, in repousse pattern with exquisite, highly realistic, floral motifs, standing on 3 legs, with handles adorned with leaf motifs. Each measures 8 1/8'' from handle to spout by 4 1/2'' in height by 4'' in depth and bears hallmarks as shown. Total weight is 22.6 troy ounces.
Baltimore’s prominent silver manufacturing company, Samuel Kirk
Son, dates its beginning to 1815. Just 5 years later, Maria Hester Monroe, daughter of President James Monroe, was married in the White House. She chose Kirk Mayflower as her silverware pattern. During this early period Kirk introduced to America the repousse treatment for silverware.
