About the Item

Rare candlestick in sterling silver by Sciarrotta for Bailey, Banks, and Biddle in riveting, modern design. Measuring 7'' tall by 5'' in width by 3 1/8'' in depth. Weighing 6.4 ozt. Bearing hallmarks as shown. Sciarrotta’s handmade silver was sold at high-end American retailers in the mid-20th century, including Georg Jensen, Cartier, Black Starr and Gorham, Bailey Banks Biddle, and Shreve. His designs became known as “The Wedding Gift of Philadelphia and Newport” and he was often referred to as the "Modern Cellini." Bailey Kitchen, as it was originally known, was founded in Philadelphia in 1832, by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey (1806-1854) and Andrew B. Kitchen (died 1850). The partnership was dissolved in November 1846. It was reformed with new partners as Bailey Co. in 1841, and on March 1, 1878, again re-established as Bailey Banks Biddle. After 1870, they resold silver from a variety of manufacturers. At the turn of the century, Bailey Banks Biddle was commissioned by the U.S. government to update the Great Seal of the United States; its design today remains the official version of the seal.

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver Chamberstick (chamber candlestick) has a plain circular form in the George I style. The well is plain and unembellished, encompassed with a plain elevated border.
