About the Item

A silver cup from the Russian House of Bolin with shield decoration and lettering. The House of Bolin is one of the oldest Russian silver and jewellery firms to survive after the Russian Revolution and is still run by the founding family. The company was originally founded in 1796 in St. Petersburg by Carl Edvard Bolin's father-in-law, Andreas Roempler. Carl Edvard, originally from Sweden, arrived in St. Petersburg in 1833 and, upon Roempler's death, took over the business, which was joined in 1836 by his brother Henrik Conrad. In 1839 Carl Edvard was awarded the title of Imperial Court Jeweller and within a few years the company gained undisputed popularity. Due to the success of the company, in 1852 Henrik Conrad opened a shop in Moscow. Carl Edvard Bolin died in 1864, leaving his share of the company to his two sons Gustaf and Edward. Henrik Conrad's son Wilhelm James Andreevich took over the Moscow branch in 1912. He worked mainly in the Art Nouveau style, combining fine glass, crystal and ceramics with silver frames. With the outbreak of the Revolution in 1917, the St. Petersburg shop was forced to close and much of the company's stock was confiscated by the Bolsheviks. However, Wilhelm managed to transfer part of it to Germany and move the company to Stockholm, becoming court jeweller to King Gustav V of Sweden. The company is still in operation in Stockholm, in the hands of Carl Edvard Bolin's descendants, and continues to supply jewellery to the Swedish royal family. Bolin is Fabergé's biggest competitor and supplied Russian and Swedish royalty. Among his finest pieces of jewellery is the diamond and pearl tiara made for the Russian Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna and bought by Queen Maria after the revolution, which is now part of the royal collection.
