About the Item
This monumental and powerfully sculptural silver Hanukkah lamp, crafted by the acclaimed artist Henryk Winograd in New York in 1991, stands as a breathtaking example of modern Judaica infused with ancient symbolism and masterful repoussé artistry.
Substantially cast and stout in form, the lamp tapers upward from a rounded, tiered base and is supported by four stylized legs discreetly tucked beneath its structure, lending the piece both stability and elegance. The lower portion of the base steps inward at either side, forming a solid architectural foundation for the dramatic reliefs that dominate its surface.
On one side, the lamp showcases an extraordinary raised repoussé scene of the Old City of Jerusalem, rendered with exceptional depth and realism. The brick-lined walls, arched gateways, and crenellated battlements are executed with remarkable precision, evoking the ancient fortifications of the sacred city. The composition includes lush trees and shrubs, some peeking out from behind the walls, while within the cityscape rise towering buildings of varied design—bell towers, palatial turrets, and multi-leveled rooftops, all climbing naturally along the undulating landscape. This magnificent tableau is bordered by sweeping foliate wreaths, their leaves finely chased and gracefully curling along the edges of the scene.
The reverse side of the lamp mirrors this architectural sensibility with a similarly stepped structure, but instead centers on a triangular cartouche. At its heart is a protruding stone mountain wall, from which boldly emerges a finely carved Decalogue, its Ten Commandments clearly inscribed in an elegant Hebrew script. Flanking this powerful image are more of Winograd’s signature foliate wreaths, unifying the visual language of the piece with rich natural symbolism.
Crowning the top of the lamp is a row of eight sturdy candle sockets, evenly spaced and slightly elevated to emphasize symmetry. At the center, raised higher than the rest, stands the shamash—the servant light—signifying spiritual leadership and observance. Each socket is robust and well-defined, echoing the thick, commanding lines of the entire work.
Executed in high relief on thick, solid silver, this Hanukkah lamp is both a ritual object and a deeply artistic statement—imbued with Jewish history, spiritual resonance, and the unmistakable hand of one of the great late 20th-century masters of silver Judaica.
Marked and signed by the artist at the bottom of the Hanukkah Lamp.
