About the Item
A rare and exceptionally important Hanukkah lamp produced in Würzburg, a historic center of Jewish life situated along the German–French border, dating to circa 1800. This imposing and architecturally conceived lamp reflects the refined metalwork traditions of the region at the turn of the 19th century and stands as a striking example of early Central European Judaica.
The lamp is raised on four fluted columnar legs, each terminating in ball feet, lending both stability and classical elegance. These support a rectangular box-shaped base that functions as a large communal oil reservoir. The reservoir is fitted with a hinged lid, which opens to reveal eight elongated rectangular oil wells, each carefully formed with extended, rounded wick spouts projecting forward in a disciplined and harmonious row—an arrangement both practical and visually balanced.
Flanking the sides of the large oil reservoir are applied leaf ornaments, appearing to sprout organically from the body of the lamp, introducing a naturalistic decorative language that continues throughout the piece.
Rising above the base is an exceptionally fine hand-chased backplate, richly ornamented with floral swags and festoons draped along the upper rail and cascading down both sides. At the center top of the backplate is a large, prominently modeled sunflower, rendered with remarkable realism, from which the surrounding floral garlands appear to grow in a natural and flowing manner.
The backplate is architecturally framed by two vertical columns, each decorated with a distinctive scaled motif arranged in a neat vertical sequence. These columns are crowned at their summits, reinforcing the formal symmetry of the design. At the center of the upper rail stands a third, smaller column, harmoniously integrated with the flanking pair yet distinguished by a larger crown at its crest, establishing a clear visual hierarchy. On either side of this central column are applied palm branches, symbols of righteousness, victory, and spiritual endurance within Jewish visual tradition.
Completing the composition is the servant oil cup, positioned at the upper side of the backplate. Elegantly designed, it features a looped bend at its center and an L-shaped stem that elevates the cup above the main structure. The servant lamp itself is gracefully flared, fitted with a small spout, and secured firmly into the rear of the backplate, ensuring both functionality and visual prominence.
This Hanukkah lamp is notable not only for its scale and craftsmanship, but also for its rare architectural complexity, blending classical forms with richly symbolic botanical ornament. As a product of Würzburg circa 1800, it reflects a moment when Jewish ceremonial art in Central Europe reached a high level of technical sophistication and aesthetic ambition. Such lamps are exceedingly scarce today and are highly prized by collectors and institutions for their historical, artistic, and cultural significance.
Hallmarked at the lower front of the backplate.
