About the Item
An exceptionally rare and finely crafted silver Simchat Torah flag, Germany, circa 1890. Uniting religious symbolism with masterful metalwork, this ceremonial object is shaped in the form of a traditional waving flag, mounted on a delicately formed stylized cylindrical pole. The pennant is affixed to the shaft with a rotating cylindrical joint, allowing the flag to turn freely—a clever mechanical element that enhances the naturalistic waving motion of the piece.
The rectangular flag, with one edge artistically formed in a gentle wavy outline, is richly hammered and embossed with detailed rose and foliate motifs flanking a central Hebrew inscription:
שישו וגילו בשמחת תורה
This inscription translates to “Rejoice and be glad on Simchat Torah,” and is particularly notable for its use of the less common word וגילו rather than the more modern form ושמחו, offering both historical interest and liturgical authenticity.
Above and below the inscription, two ribbon-like pennants are artistically integrated into precisely cut slits in the smooth silver surface, adding depth and a celebratory rhythm to the composition. The text and floral decorations are all in relief, with crisp chasing and delicate engraving giving dimensionality and texture to the overall form.
Surmounting the top of the pole is a beautifully modeled apple-form finial, detailed with fine lined stalk designs. Crowned at its center is a delicate boboche and candleholder, designed to hold a small ceremonial candle, adding a radiant element during procession or celebration.
This is a rare surviving example of a 19th-century silver Torah flag, used traditionally during the joyous festival of Simchat Torah, when celebrants would carry such flags during the dancing with the Torah scrolls. The piece is not only a splendid example of Jewish ceremonial silver but also a charming reflection of Ashkenazi Jewish life and ritual in late 19th-century Germany.
