About the Item

This refined French mustard pot is crafted in solid silver and bears the Vieillard hallmark, used in Paris between 1819 and 1838, allowing the piece to be confidently dated to the first half of the 19th century. This mark, introduced after the fall of the Empire, is a key reference in French silver and attests to both the quality of the metal and its official control. Raised on a square pedestal base resting on four ball feet, the mustard pot presents an elegant and well-proportioned Neoclassical silhouette. The body is finely decorated with chased palmette motifs inspired by classical antiquity, while the graceful scrolling side handles terminate in delicately detailed rosettes, adding sculptural depth and balance to the design. The hinged domed lid is topped with a turned finial and features a shaped opening for a spoon, combining practicality with refined craftsmanship. Inside, the piece retains its original removable silver liner, a particularly desirable feature that enhances both its functionality and its collectability. With its clear Vieillard hallmark, elegant ornamentation, and original elements preserved, this mustard pot is a fine example of early 19th-century French silverwork. It would make a distinguished addition to an antique silver collection, an elegant table setting, or a curated decorative display.
