About the Item
A refined and highly decorative example of early 20th-century American silver, this sterling silver bread basket by Woodside Sterling Co. showcases the firm’s hallmark elegance and attention to detail. The basket features a classic oval form with gently flared sides and a richly worked rim, making it both visually striking and eminently practical.
The border is beautifully ornamented with an interlaced ribbon-and-scroll motif, accented at regular intervals by delicately modeled floral blossoms. This combination of flowing movement and floral punctuation is characteristic of Woodside’s decorative language—ornate without excess, decorative yet disciplined.
The interior is smooth, bright, and generously proportioned, ideal for serving bread, rolls, challah, pastries, or fruit. A finely engraved script monogram on the interior wall adds period charm and reflects the long-standing tradition of personalized table silver meant for regular use and family gatherings.
The underside bears the Woodside hallmark—a “W” within a laurel wreath—along with the STERLING designation and the model number 2785, confirming both authenticity and quality. Woodside Sterling Co., active in New York in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was respected for producing well-crafted silver that balanced durability with refined ornamentation.
Substantial yet elegant, decorative without being ostentatious, this bread basket is a quintessential example of American table silver from a time when craftsmanship mattered and good design was expected. In short: the kind of piece that has always belonged on a well-set table—and still does today.
