About the Item

A striking and highly decorative pair of sterling silver compotes by B.R. B. Co., executed in an exuberant Art Nouveau–influenced floral style that celebrates the virtuosity of late-19th to early-20th-century American silversmithing. Each compote is crafted in solid sterling silver and features a generously proportioned, shallow bowl with a softly reflective interior. The interiors retain their elegant simplicity, drawing the eye naturally toward the engraved central monograms, which lend a sense of personal history and bespoke origin—these were not casual tablewares, but commissioned objects meant to mark occasion and family. The real drama lies in the exterior detailing. The rims are lavishly adorned with high-relief repoussé floral and foliate decoration, bursting with dimensional blossoms, curling tendrils, and scrolling leaves. This ornamentation continues seamlessly down the baluster-form stems and into the wide, sculptural bases, which are richly embellished with layered flowers and lattice-like motifs. The depth and crispness of the chasing indicate skilled handwork and a confident artistic hand—silver made when time, talent, and pride were still generously allotted. The undersides are clearly stamped “B.R. B. Co.”, confirming maker and authenticity. The weight, scale, and workmanship place these compotes firmly in the golden age of American decorative silver, when tableware doubled as sculpture and utility was never an excuse for plainness. Perfectly suited for fruit, sweets, nuts, or dessert service, these compotes also shine as decorative accents—equally at home flanking a centerpiece, anchoring a sideboard, or standing alone as objets d’art. As a matched pair, they offer symmetry, presence, and undeniable character. In short, this is silver from an era that didn’t believe in understatement for its own sake—bold, romantic, unapologetically ornate, and made to be admired as much as it is used. The kind of silver that reminds us why the old ways were, quite often, the better ones.
