An exceptional sterling silver breadbasket by the Whiting Manufacturing Company, dated 1909, showcasing the firm’s mastery of repoussé and chased silverwork during the Edwardian era.
Of oval form, the basket features a broad, gently curved interior bordered by a beaded rim and richly decorated with repoussé baskets overflowing with flowers positioned at cardinal points around the central reserve. Each floral basket is rendered in extraordinary detail, with deeply chased blooms and finely stippled texture, creating dimensional contrast against the polished ground.
The central oval reserve is smooth and unmonogrammed, framed by an engraved border of scrolling acanthus leaves — providing both balance and visual depth. The interplay of mirror-bright silver and textured floral repoussé captures the refined naturalism and ornamental exuberance characteristic of Whiting’s best early 20th-century silver.
