About the Item
These sterling silver candlesticks by Reed
Barton are a classic study in proportion, balance, and quiet ornament—pieces that understand their role perfectly and perform it without theatrics.
Each candlestick rises from a broad, octagonal stepped base, lending both visual authority and excellent stability. The base is crisply paneled, with engraved geometric reserves framed by a finely detailed border of repeating motifs that runs along the outer edge. It’s the kind of decoration that rewards a second look—precise, disciplined, and very much of its time.
The tapered columnar shafts are vertically fluted, drawing the eye upward and giving the candlesticks their elegant height without heaviness. Toward the upper section, the surface transitions into delicately engraved foliate motifs, adding softness and classical charm just before the form meets the candle cup. This gradual shift from architectural to decorative is handled with confidence—no abrupt changes, no excess.
At the top, the flat, slightly flared candle plates are finished with a restrained rope-style border, a traditional detail that frames the candle cleanly while protecting the surface below. The cups are generously proportioned, suitable for standard tapers and designed for actual use, not just display.
The underside markings confirm their pedigree: Reed
Barton, Sterling, along with model numbers and the notation “cement reinforced”, indicating weighted construction for durability—because candlesticks were meant to stand straight, even when the table conversation didn’t.
Altogether, these candlesticks embody what Reed
Barton did so well: sterling silver that was handsome, dependable, and made for a lifetime of dinners, holidays, and quiet evenings. In an age of disposable décor and flickering screens, they remind us that a proper candle deserves a proper home—and that good design never needed to shout to be heard.
