About the Item
A refined pair of sterling silver pedestal compotes by Shreve
Co., San Francisco—quietly elegant, impeccably proportioned, and very much in the tradition of early-20th-century American silver made for formal entertaining.
Each compote is fashioned in solid sterling silver, featuring a gently dished circular bowl with a soft, luminous surface that reflects light rather than shouting for attention. The shallow profile makes them ideal for presenting sweets, fruit, nuts, or petits fours—proof that good design has always understood restraint. The bowls rise on slender, baluster-form stems, tapering gracefully into broad, weighted circular bases that provide excellent stability without visual heaviness.
The overall aesthetic is classically restrained—no engraving, no fuss—allowing the purity of form and material to take center stage. This clean-lined elegance is a hallmark of Shreve
Co.’s silver offerings, particularly those produced during the late Edwardian to early Art Deco transition, when taste favored balance, proportion, and usability over excess ornament.
The undersides are clearly stamped “SHREVE
CO / STERLING / SAN FRANCISCO,” confirming both maker and material. The marks are crisp and honest, exactly what seasoned collectors like to see. Condition is very good, with only light surface marks consistent with age and careful use—what one might call earned character, not wear.
These compotes are endlessly versatile: perfect on a formal dining table, flanking a centerpiece, or used individually on a sideboard or dessert table. And as a matched pair, they offer symmetry that never goes out of style—rather like black tie, or sterling itself.
A handsome and timeless example of American sterling silver, from a firm synonymous with West Coast luxury and craftsmanship—made to serve, made to last, and made without cutting corners (unlike modern shortcuts that shall remain unnamed).
