About the Item
Sterling Silver Grape Shears by Whiting Manufacturing in Art Nouveau Vine Pattern. Measurements; 7" long; 2 1/2" at widest point. These elegant shears are from the turn of the century, with a beautifully detailed vine pattern that includes wood detailing on the handles. Has hallmark as shown.
Originally based in Massachusetts, Whiting Manufacturing Company relocated to New York in 1875. The company was purchased by Gorham in 1924 and the production transferred to Providence, Rhode Island. Whiting had relatively small production output but produced exceptional handmade silverware in relatively small quantities. The Company's most famous and important designer was Charles Osborne. In the 1880's he worked for Tiffany for a period of time before returning to Whiting. His designs are some of the most important of the American aesthetic movement.

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver gilt grape shears; an addition to our silver flatware collection.
This exceptional pair of antique Victorian cast sterling silver gilt grape shears has a hinged scissor action.
The handles of these grape scissors are embellished with plain intertwining stems to double antique dolphin decorated fingerpieces, accented with details reproducing the scales, in addition to a shell motif.
The circular hinged portion is embellished with a man in the moon mask design.
The grape shears are fitted with flat engraved scrolling leaf decorated blades, with a rounded outer edge.
These exceptional examples of 19th century silver flatware retain the original gilding.
