About the Item

This sterling silver gravy boat and under-tray by Gorham Silversmiths is an elegant expression of late-19th to early-20th-century American silver—refined, ceremonial, and unapologetically proper. The gravy boat itself is beautifully proportioned, with a softly scalloped, gently undulating rim that flows seamlessly into a pronounced pouring lip. The bowl swells gracefully from a low, stepped pedestal foot, giving the piece both visual weight and excellent balance. A bold yet restrained handle, squared at the top and tapering elegantly into the body, offers a comfortable grip while lending an architectural counterpoint to the otherwise fluid form. Encircling the body is fine hand-engraved decoration, composed of scrolling foliage, delicate drops, and classical flourishes arranged in a continuous frieze just beneath the rim. On one side, a script monogram has been carefully engraved—evidence that this piece once held a place of honor on a well-appointed dining table, likely reserved for formal dinners rather than everyday meals. The engraving is light and confident, never overpowering the form, exactly as Gorham intended. The accompanying under-tray mirrors the gravy boat’s elegance and completes the set with purpose. Its shaped, scalloped outline echoes the curves of the vessel above, while a raised oval well at the center cradles the gravy boat securely. The tray is richly engraved around the perimeter with matching scrollwork, rosettes, and classical motifs, creating visual continuity between the two pieces. Even the border detailing is thoughtfully restrained—ornamental, but never busy. Both pieces bear the Gorham sterling marks, a guarantee of quality from one of America’s most respected silversmiths. Gorham excelled at creating table silver that balanced beauty with function—objects meant not just to be admired, but to be used with ceremony and pride. Today, this gravy boat and under-tray stand as a reminder of a time when serving gravy was not an afterthought, but a small ritual—one that deserved sterling silver, careful engraving, and a proper place at the table. No shortcuts, no stainless steel substitutes—just tradition, craftsmanship, and good manners poured generously.
