About the Item

A beautiful example of early 20th-century American silver craftsmanship, this sterling silver gravy boat by Theodore B. Starr combines classic elegance with refined details. Founded in New York in the mid-19th century, Theodore Starr was known for producing high-quality silver pieces with a sophisticated aesthetic, and this piece is no exception. The gravy boat features a graceful oval bowl set atop a raised pedestal base with a square footprint, lending it a stately and balanced silhouette. The gently curved spout and arching handle provide both functionality and form, enhancing its visual appeal. A delicate beaded border encircles the rim and spout, adding a touch of decorative refinement without overwhelming the overall clean lines of the piece. On one side, a hand-engraved script monogram—likely original to the piece—adds a personal and historical dimension. The engraving is finely executed, showing the level of detail typical of luxury silverwork from this period. Marked on the underside with “Theodore B. Starr” and “Sterling,” the piece dates from the early 20th century, prior to the firm’s merger with Gorham in the 1920s.

There isn’t much in the way of decoration but the shape and style of this water pitcher is fabulous. Notice the curved body juxtaposed against the straight handle. There’s a ribbing pattern along the neck that’s complimented in the lines and curl in the handle. The spout is narrow, which is helpful when pouring. There is an Old English letter L monogram...
