About the Item
This hammered sterling silver water pitcher by International Silver is a handsome example of early 20th-century American design—honest, functional, and quietly elegant, with just enough ornament to remind you that craftsmanship once mattered.
The body is tapered and slightly faceted, rising from a solid pedestal base and widening gently toward the rim. Its surface is finished in a hand-hammered texture, deliberately irregular and alive with movement, allowing the silver to catch and reflect light in a soft, almost liquid way. This isn’t factory shine meant to impress at a glance—it’s texture meant to be appreciated slowly, preferably across a well-set table.
At the front is a shield-shaped cartouche, left blank and framed with restrained engraving. It was designed for a monogram that may never have been added—a small mercy, really—leaving the pitcher clean, versatile, and timeless. The subtly pinched spout pours cleanly and gracefully, while the angular handle, with its squared-off lines, adds a touch of architectural strength that balances the softness of the hammered surface.
The pitcher stands on a low, stepped pedestal foot, giving it stability and visual weight. The base is finished with the same hammered treatment, reinforcing the unity of the design and ensuring it feels substantial in hand—because a proper water pitcher should never feel flimsy.
Inside the base, the markings confirm its pedigree: International Silver / J.S.Co., Sterling, along with the model designation. International Silver knew how to do this sort of thing well—producing sterling that was meant to be used daily, polished occasionally, and handed down without apology.
Today, this pitcher feels especially relevant. It belongs to a time when pouring water was a small ritual, not an afterthought, and when even the most practical objects were made with dignity and permanence. No batteries, no plastic, no nonsense—just sterling silver doing its job, as it has for generations.
