About the Item
striking modernist Havdalah set by renowned silversmith Ludwig Wolpert, comprising a Kiddush goblet, candleholder, spice tower, and circular tray—all executed in sterling silver and unified through Wolpert’s characteristic clarity of line and disciplined elegance. Each piece is adorned with embossed Hebrew inscriptions, presenting the traditional Havdalah blessings for wine, spices, and fire. The minimalist forms, free of unnecessary ornament, allow the textual elements to become the central visual and spiritual focus, in keeping with Wolpert’s modern Jewish design philosophy.
A closely related example was exhibited in The Israel Museum’s 2012–2013 exhibition “Forging Ahead: Wolpert and Gumbel—Israeli Silversmiths for the Modern Age,” and is illustrated in the accompanying catalog, p. 85—underscoring the significance of this design within Wolpert’s oeuvre and within the development of 20th-century Judaica.
Dimensions:
Candleholder: 3 1/2 × 2 in.
Spice container: 5 1/2 × 2 3/16 in.
Cup: 5 9/16 × 2 3/4 in.
Plate: 8 1/16 in. diameter
Rooted in the ritual marking the close of the Sabbath, Havdalah centers on blessings recited over wine, fragrant spices, and a multi-wicked flame—symbolizing the transition from sacred time back into the workweek. Wolpert’s design distills these ancient elements into pure, modern forms that remain deeply respectful of tradition.
About Ludwig Wolpert:
Ludwig Wolpert (1900–1981) was trained in sculpture and metalwork at the School of Arts and Crafts in Frankfurt am Main, where he absorbed the aesthetics of German modernism. After emigrating to Palestine in 1933, he joined the faculty of the New Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem as Professor of Metalwork, becoming one of the most influential figures in the modernization of Jewish ceremonial design. His groundbreaking Bauhaus-inspired Judaica achieved international recognition at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. In 1956, Wolpert founded the Toby Pascher Workshop at The Jewish Museum in New York, where for the next 25 years he trained silversmiths and produced some of the most iconic ritual objects of the modern age.
This Havdalah set stands as an exemplary work—refined, innovative, and spiritually resonant—embodying Wolpert’s vision of a modern Jewish aesthetic that pairs timeless ritual with contemporary design.
Included with this set is the original letters of correspondence from the original purchaser of the set to and from Betty Wolpert the wife of the then late Ludwig Yehuda Wolpert.
