About the Item

This fine Victorian sterling silver muffineer (or sugar caster) displays the richly ornamented repoussé and piercing work characteristic of mid-19th century English silver. The cylindrical body is elaborately decorated with chased floral and foliate scrolls, incorporating symmetrical leafwork and central rosette motifs framed by fine textured backgrounds. The repoussé detailing demonstrates the silversmith’s mastery of depth and definition, creating a highly decorative surface of intricate relief. The pierced domed cover, similarly adorned with scrolling acanthus and foliate designs, is surmounted by a small knop finial. The pierced ornamentation allows for an even dusting of sugar, as was customary for serving muffins and pastries in elegant Victorian tea service. The muffineer stands on a plain circular molded foot, offering a stable base and a pleasing visual contrast to the ornate decoration of the body. The hallmarks, struck on the underside, include: The maker’s mark “L H L” for the Lias Brothers (Jonathan, George Henry Lias), The lion passant indicating sterling silver, The leopard’s head for London, And the date letter “h” corresponding to 1843. This piece is an excellent example of early Victorian silver craftsmanship, combining functional form with lavish ornamentation. Its restrained proportions and finely detailed repoussé decoration make it both a decorative object and a testament to the refinement of London silversmithing in the mid-19th century.
