About the Item
A fine Victorian cornucopia shaped sugar sifter/caster with embossed floral and foliate decoration. Gilded interior supported by twin legs the cartouche engraved WS-MM JAN 1896 - 1911, on scroll feet terminating with serpent head.
13.5cm high weighing approx. 201g. Hallmarks good see photo dating the piece to 1898, assayed in London. in overall very good condition.

The firm was established around 1850, in Birmingham by George Cartwright and Joseph Hirons, known as Cartwright
Hirons.
In 1853, Horace Woodward joined the firm, the firm then changed its name to Cartwright, Hirons
Woodward. Six years later, Joseph Hirons left, and the name changed to Cartwright
Woodward
.George Cartwright retired in 1865. The firm did continue with Horace Woodward, becoming Horace Woodward
Co. In 1883 Horace Woodward left the firm. The firm carried on under new ownership still under the name Horace Woodward
Co. until 1893, when the firm became registered as a limited liability company - Horace Woodward
Co Ltd.
In 1919 the firm was acquired by Aidie Brothers Ltd. creating Cartwright
Woodward.
