About the Item

Vintage Set of Six Early 20th Century Canada Birks Silver Open Salt Cellars or salt cups. The brand 'Birks" signifies item was made by the famous Canadian silversmith Henry Birks Sons. Each cup is hand-chased with intricate Rococo style floral and foliate motifs in repousse relief. The bowls feature scalloped rims and rest on four small feet, giving them a sense of balance and elegance. Once an essential feature of the formal dining table, and long before salt shakers became common, these small bowls were traditionally used to hold salt for individual diners at a table. Each also has a maker's mark on the underside. Wonderful aged patina.
