About the Item
A distinguished ceremonial Yom Kippur belt, created in faithful continuation of an old and deeply meaningful Eastern European Jewish tradition. From the late 18th through the late 19th century, it was customary for Jewish men to don a prominent belt over the white kittel on Yom Kippur—a gesture of humility, reverence, and honor upon appearing before the Holy One, blessed be He, on this most solemn day. Although made in the 20th century, the present example adheres closely to the aesthetic and devotional spirit of those earlier belts, echoing their symbolism and craftsmanship.
The silver buckle is finely cast and richly decorated, centered by a shield-shaped cartouche from which two elegant acanthus leaves unfold in a graceful, symmetrical flourish. The ground is patterned with a delicate checkmarked texture, providing depth and contrast to the raised ornamentation. Set prominently along the upper section of the buckle is the sacred verse recited with awe on Yom Kippur, finely inscribed in Hebrew:
"כי ביום הזה יכפר עליכם לטהר אתכם מכל חטאתיכם לפני ה' תטהרו"
(“For on this day He shall atone for you, to purify you; from all your sins before the Lord you shall be purified.”)
At the lower edge, framed within a ribbon-shaped cartouche, appears the Hebrew name יוסף הערצ"ה (Yosef Hertzah), presumably the original owner—its inclusion adding a human, personal dimension to this piece of devotional attire.
The belt itself is composed of a beautifully embroidered gold fabric, its surface adorned with refined textile ornamentation that complements the silverwork of the buckle. A sturdy latch at the end of the belt fastens securely to the reverse of the buckle, completing the traditional form.
