About the Item

A fine ceremonial Yom Kippur belt, fashioned in continuation of an old and meaningful European Jewish tradition in which men wore a prominent belt atop the kittel on Yom Kippur as a sign of reverence and honor before the Holy One, blessed be He. Though produced in the 20th century, this example follows faithfully the design language and devotional character of the belts worn from the late 18th through the late 19th century. The silver buckle is of substantial form and richly cast with a dramatic and deeply symbolic biblical depiction of the Akeidat Yitzchak (Binding of Isaac). The central scene portrays Abraham, dressed in distinguished, flowing garments, one hand resting gently upon Isaac’s head while the other arm is raised, grasping the knife—his motion halted by a heavenly angel who restrains the act. To one side stand Eliezer and the young Ishmael, set atop a donkey, rendered in smaller scale behind Abraham as part of the narrative tableau. Isaac is shown bound upon a stone altar, his figure sensitively modeled. Opposite the altar, a grove of trees shelters the ram, its presence alluding to the divine substitution. Above the cast imagery appears the solemn and sacred verse recited with awe on Yom Kippur: "כי ביום הזה יכפר עליכם לטהר אתכם מכל חטאתיכם לפני ה' תטהרו" (“For on this day He shall atone for you, to purify you; from all your sins before the Lord you shall be purified.”) The belt itself is crafted of embroidered fabric, decorated with elegant floral and foliate motifs worked in harmonious colors, echoing traditional Central and Eastern European textile ornamentation. At the far end of the belt is a secure latch mechanism designed to fasten neatly into the buckle for a firm and comfortable fit when worn atop the kittel.
