About the Item
On the large side and very well made with much attention to detail, this late 19th century toothpick holder portrays a working man atop a penny farthing bicycle with a barrel strapped across his back (holds the toothpicks) mounted on a diamond repeat pattern base. Note the fine detail to the rope link, the spokes, facial features and clothing folds, simulating a realistic scene to this unique figural silver plated toothpick holder. In addition to hygene, toothpicks would have been used as cocktail skewers for olives, fruit bits, or small hors d' oeuvres. Could have also been used for wooden matches to light candles.
Markings and etching on the underneath indicate it was made by "James W. Tufts" Boston, Warranted Quadruple Plate Item#2649 with 2613". It is in all original condition with the preponderance of silver plate intact and a lovely patina to the original surface. There have been no alterations or repairs of any kind. Simply a wonderful gift item for the collector of silver and silver plated figural and novelty items from the Victorian era.

19th Century Silver Plated Victorian Figural "Kate Greenway" Themed Napkin Ring
Located in Incline Village, NV
The Kate Greenway style Victorian figural silver plated napkin rings are probably the most sought after and desirable rings of the 19th century, and this ring depicting a little girl sitting on a small sled next to a napkin ring is in that category.
Kate Greenway was a mid 19th century British children's book author who created Dickens' like characters with innocent child type characteristics, and illustrated them in her publications; attaining world wide acclaim and adoration which was not lost on the figural napkin ring industry at the time. This ring is completely original in every aspect with no restoration, and the majority of the silver plate still intact. The floral and wreath repousse application to the central ring body is bordered by a double ring raised edge perimeter. The girl is cast in great detail with lifelike facial features and Victorian period clothing and bonnet. The underneath is marked (see image) ""Derby Silver Co.Derby, Ct," and "Quadruple Plate 316" with the anchor and crown logo in the center. All in all, this is simply a lovely and charming desirable ring to add to your collection or even better to adorn your dinner tableware presentation. The ring was manufactured by the Derby Silver plate company...
