About the Item

This is an antique Japanese soup-bowl made around 1930s with wood. This soup-bowl is made with wajima-nuri, a Japanese lacquerware from Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture in Japan. Wajima-nuri is made by the applying multiple layers of urushi mixed with powdered diatomaceous earth onto delicate wooden substrates. Wajima-nuri is divided into three major processes before the bowls are finished. The "lacquer coating" process with around 23 steps. Each process is carried out by a division of labor, with each craftsman or workshop in charge of a particular process, and it can take more than a year to complete.
