Art Deco set of knife benches
A knife bench (also: knife bench) is used to put down the used eating utensils in order to have the plate free and not to soil the table, the tablecloth or other supports.
There are knife benches in different designs:
Classic: cross bar on X stand.
Modern: Transverse block
Special forms: small figures or little animals (made of metal). Tubular examples also occur; they are made of glass, with one end bent up to insert a flower. Rarer are knife banks, which also serve as holders for place cards or napkins.
The cutlery rests on the knife bench at approximately the point where the handle joins the blade or eating part of the spoon and fork, with the handle end resting on the table and the front part protruding into the air beyond the knife bench. Knife banks are offered by many cutlery manufacturers to match the rest of the cutlery in a series. Knife banks typically belong to the area of festive table culture.
In Japanese dining culture, the Hashioki (jap. 箸置き, literally chopstick holder) is a similar tableware item.
