Dutch silver oval bowl, breadbasket by Schoorl/ Krot, Amsterdam, dated 1928 A beautiful oval bowl / breadbasket with five scenes of Jan Steen and an animal head depicted in each corner. The scenes in high relief in silver, these scenes are from the 17th century paintings by Jan Steen. Jan Havickszoon Steen (Leiden, 1626 – 1679) was a Dutch painter from the 17th century, the time of Northern Dutch Baroque painting. His work is world famous for its humorous and ironic view of life. He is best known for his entertaining paintings of a messy and wild household, pub scenes and quacks who try to cure heartbreak with medicine. However, his repertoire also includes serious history pieces, other genre scenes and some portraits. The Dutch expressions 'a Jan Steen household' and 'bringing life into the brewery' are derived from his work. The oval breadbasket or decorative bowl is completely marked with the Dutch silver hallmarks. The hallmark "Lion 2" for Dutch silver with 835/000 purity of silver. The Minerva head, that is the Assayer's mark with letter "A" for the City Amsterdam. The bowl is dated with letter "S" for the Year 1928. The silver smith master mark is for the Zaanse Zilversmederij in Amsterdam-Haarlem, E. Schoorl and H.L. Krot. This master sign is used between 1920-1990. The oval bowl/ basket measures 6.5 cm high, 31.3 cm wide and the depth is 24.7 cm. The weight of the bowl/basket is 440 grams
