About the Item

French Art Deco Tea and Coffee Set by Marcel Goupy Rouard for 12 people. This earthenware set has this irresistible Celadon colour. The shapes are beautifully rounded, soft and rendering this material particularly well. Marcel Goupy shows here his passion for nature with the delicate handles with fruits and leaves. What modernism in designing the cups handles horizontally which is ergonomically very good. Here Goupy's design shows the interconnection with Jean Luce's. The set was edited by the famous Rouard Parisian's editor. This rare set for twelve people comprises the coffee pot, sugar pot, and milk or cream jug, six coffee cups and saucers, six tea cups and saucers, all marked by Rouard. All in mint condition except for one coffee cup with a hair, and one coffee cp with a tiny chip shown on four of the last pictures. A picture shows a document attesting it is designed by Marcel Goupy. Marcel GOUPY (1886-1954) was a watercolour painter before developing a passion for ceramics and glass. A graduate of the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, his meeting with Georges (Géo) Rouard in 1909 was decisive for his career. He began working with gallery owner Rouard in 1914, providing drawings and designs for glassware. In 1919, he became chief decorator at the gallery, then its artistic director in 1929 upon the death of Géo Rouard, until 1954 in the workshop of the ‘Cristallerie de la Paix’ store, located at 34-36 Avenue de l'Opéra in Paris. This shop was taken over by Géo Rouard and became a centre for the distribution of avant-garde decorative creations after the 1914-1918 war. Marcel Goupy's works were among many prestigious names such as Delaherche, Decoeur, Mayodon and Lenoble for ceramics, Dunand for silverware, and René Lalique, Maurice Marinot, Henri Navarre, André Thuret and François Décorchemont for glassware.
