About the Item

The scarce Mayan pattern was designed in 1937 by Johan Rohde. Georg Jensen is one of the world's most significant silversmiths, who formed an international following due to his innovative and sculptural work and his collaborations with other highly talented designers. He started in Copenhagen as a sculptor and goldsmith working his way into silversmithing. He was the first to blur lines between artistry and craftsmanship with his ornamental design in the early 1900's. In 1904 he opened his first shop and quickly gained a following, with those stating he "never followed fashion, he created it". In 1918 he opened a much larger shop and when he passed in 1935 he already had an international reputation for superb craftsmanship. He was reigned as "the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years". Exceedingly rare Dinner Size Mayan by Georg Jensen sterling silver flatware set - 41 pieces. Johan Rohde (1856 - 1935) was a renowned Danish painter, graphic artist, and designer. Born into an affluent merchant family, he went on to a career in art. In 1875 he studied painting and drawing in the studio of Fredrik Rohde, Wenzel Tornoe and C.F. Andersen. From 1881 - 1882 he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. From 1883 through 1887 he studied at the Artists’ Studio School, where one of his teachers, acclaimed painter P.S. Kroyer, passed along a strong interest in progressive trends in French painting. By the late 1880s Rohde had achieved recognition for his painting and his work was included in important exhibitions held in Denmark and Germany. He was a member of the Avant Garde and a prominent rebel within the Danish art world. In 1903 Rohde began his professional association with Georg Jensen when Jensen commissioned him to fabricate objects that Rohde had designed for Jensen's personal use. Rohde and Jensen gradually formed a closer bond. Rohde created many designs that are still in production today. One of the most famous is the Acorn pattern. Rohde also designed textiles and furniture.
