About the Item
This 49'r, hard to find, "Gold Miner" silver plated Victorian napkin ring thematic subject matter makes it highly desirable since, in addition to those who collect figural items, many people collect historical gold mining articles relating to the western gold rush that took place in California, Nevada, and Alaska in the mid to late 19th century. The gold miner is standing aside the ring with his left hand holding a pick axe and his right hand resting on the tri-shaped oval ring. It was made by the Van Burgh Silver Co. located in Rochester, New York; having been established in 1892 and terminating production in 1926. They were known for producing fine quality silver plated items and tableware and administering quadruple plate for long lasting usage.
This particular ring is quite unique in that it has a medallion affixed to the outside of the ring embossed:
"Totem Pole
A.Y.P.E.
Seattle,Washington
attesting to it's age and provenance, and the fact that the Van Burgh Silver Company was commissioned, and specially made this ring as a memento to commemorate this event; The Alaskan Yukon Pacific Exposition (AYPA); which took place at that location in 1909 (Seattle, Washington). The ring is in excellent and all original condition with no restoration and just about all of it's silver plating intact. With Victorian napkin rings, it's all about condition when determining quality and value. Be vigilant of reproductions, as fakes are abundant. I guarantee the originality of this ring to be original and Victorian.
In the Victorian era family tradition each family member had their own distinctive napkin ring since the napkin was to be re-used for subsequent meals (no washing machines in those days); while guests got to have their own designated ring also. Nowadays, silver plated Victorian figural napkin rings have become quite collectible with some dinner hosts placing napkin rings in their place servings trying to match up and reflect characteristics and personality traits of their prospective guests with the subject matter and theme of the ring.
The Gold Miner is memorialized as Plate 691 on page 280 and referenced in Gottschalk and Sandra Whitson book "Figural Napkin Rings" published in 1996. It is also mentioned and pictured in Schnadig's 1973 "American Victorian Figural Napkin Rings on page 93.
