About the Item
A fine cased Victorian silver dessert cutlery set by renowned silversmith John Gilbert, hallmarked, 1866. The set comprises twelve dessert forks and twelve dessert knives, each exquisitely adorned with chased and engraved vine and grape motifs along the blades and tines, and with elaborately cast rococo-style handles.
The silver blades and forks bear crisp hallmarks including the maker’s initials J.G., the anchor (for Birmingham), lion passant (sterling silver), and the date letter ‘R’ for 1866.
The ensemble is presented in its original fitted mahogany veneered case with brass escutcheon, lock and key, lined in royal blue velvet and satin, retaining its period elegance.

Good antique condition with light age-related tarnish, minor surface wear, and some gentle fading to the interior lining. Hallmarks are clear and well-struck.
