About the Item

A Very Fine William IV Flatware Set Made in London in 1837 by John and Henry Lias. With regard to the knives, the set has twelve silver handled knives, six for bread/starters and six table knives. They were made in London in 1964 by C.J. Vander and are in excellent condition. The whole set is in outstanding condition and is very well marked. This is a rare pattern and Ian Pickford in "Silver Flatware", emphasises that "This is a rare variant of the Old English pattern distinguished by a shell at the top of the stem. It is first found in the 1770's, but was mostly produced during the Victorian period". With regard to the weight, it weighs a very good 101oz in total. John and Henry Lias were father and son and specialist flatware maker's. Henry Lias was an accomplished silversmith, with exceptional reputation, as he was elected to the prestigious position of Prime Warden of the Goldsmith's Company in 1861. Additional information: The set is modelled in the Old English Thread and Shell pattern and consists of thirty pieces, six place settings, made up of: Six Tablespoons: Length: 9inches. Six Tableforks: Length: 9 inches. Six Dessert Spoons: Length: 7 inches. Six Dessert Forks: Length: 7 inches. Six Tea/Starter spoons: Length: 5.8 inches.
