This rare Sakura tea service, designed in 1967 by Japanese-Italian designer Makio Hasuike for Ceramica Franco Pozzi, represents one of the most distinctive achievements of late mid-century Italian tableware. Awarded 2nd prize at the MACEF Milano Award shortly after its debut, the set blends functional research with an unmistakably modern sculptural presence.
The brick red vitreous china, clean geometry and square-based proportions reflect Hasuike’s experimental approach during the 1960s. The innovation lies in the cups: an internal diaphragm replaces the traditional handle, keeping the lower portion cool and creating a secure, ergonomic grip.
The full service includes six cups and saucers, a teapot, creamer and lidded sugar bowl. All pieces remain in excellent vintage condition with light superficial marks and minimal firing traces.
A highly sought-after collectible for serious admirers of Italian modernism, industrial design history and the Franco Pozzi production legacy.
