GALLIA (Maison Christofle)
Born in the 20th century, at the time of the famous 1900 World's Fair in Paris,
the Gallia Collection takes its name from a metal alloy that marked its era.
Gallia, a name that refers to "Gaulle," and whose hallmark and symbol will be the rooster, thus once again honoring French innovation.
This material has marked the history of Christofle. Of high quality and greater hardness for tableware, it has the advantage of being solid, lasting longer, and able to be cast in a steel mold, rather than hammered.
Very quickly, Gallia served as a laboratory of ideas for Christofle, with collections featuring bold, modern styles, whereas tableware and decorative arts in general had been constantly repeating Louis XVI motifs, motifs from the 18th and 19th centuries since 1850.
This was the moment of the advent of Art Nouveau, which placed Nature—a stylized Nature—at the center of taste. Following it, the 20th century saw an explosion of new styles, from Art Deco to Modernism. The Gallia collection allowed Christofle's fine silversmithing to experiment with new forms. From 1900, extraordinary artists and designers came together under the name Gallia and the aegis of Christofle, to offer collaborations adorned with the rooster hallmark, becoming for a century the sign of the avant-garde.
